Concert in Montreal Aug 11
Chor Leoni has some wonderful music for pipe organ and men's
choir and the "Up to Your Ears" Festival Series in Montreal proved to
be the perfect occasion for it. Patrick Wedd, the organist and choir
director at Christ Church Cathedral in downtown Montreal (and also one
of our Honorary patrons) literally pulled all the stops out for us and
was a most generous host ensuring that all our musical needs were met.
The Festival encouraged us to perform our most contemporary and
forward looking music and, of course, we included two selections that
allowed Patrick to display his wonderful mastery of the pipe organ.
The
French-speaking members of the audience seemed to especially appreciate
the introductions that several choir members gave in both French and
English. Such a versatile group!
Diane was very pleased by our performance and as the concert
concluded the audience showed us their appreciation with a standing
ovation. Then we sang Jonathan Quick's arrangement of "Loch Lomond" as
an encore which led to even more prolonged applause.
We managed in this one concert to showcase the full spectrum of
our sound from the most quiet and ethereal singing in "Immortal Bach"
as reinterpreted by Nystedt, to the extremes of range in the Magic
Songs by R. Murray Shafer, to the whistling effects of a storm at sea
in Incantatio by Tormis.
One of the things I enjoy at the end of our concerts is the
opportunity to greet members of the audience on their way out and I was
very moved by their words of sincere appreciation and best wishes for
the rest of our tour. All in all a great start to an exciting tour in
the heartland of Canada for Chor Leoni.
