Historical Retrospective and Current Events Aug 13

Hi members and friends of Chor Leoni.

I'm composing this message in the home of my in-laws in Outlook SK, which is where I travelled at the end of our tour. Lorraine picked me up at the Saskatoon airport around 9:30 pm on Monday, August 20, and then we drove about 1-1/4 hours to her childhood home.

Our tour gave us great opportunity to explore Canadian history. While we were in Quebec City, I and several other singers toured the old city and the site of the battles between the British and the French which determined so much of the subsequent history of our nation. The Plains of Abraham proved to be somewhat different from what I had expected. The name evokes both prairie vistas and events of Biblical import, but in truth the scene of that historic battle is much more modest. I would now describe it as "Abe's back forty" (and a not very flat back forty, at that!). Nevertheless, I am staggered by the significance of those events: they determined the course of our national history. This was something even our choir experienced as we endeavored to perform our national anthem, "O Canada."
