Something to Celebrate

Chor Leoni congratulates the Canada Council for the Arts on its 45th anniversary! The Council has provided support, encouragement, and essential funding to Canadian artists and organizations since its establishment in 1957.

Before the Council was created, there was no national agency from which Canadian artists and art organizations could obtain funding for their creative endeavours. There were only a handful of professional orchestras, top flight choirs, dance companies, few Canadian books and films, and although we had distinguished visual artists, high-quality galleries and exhibition spaces were limited to major centres.

What a difference nearly half a century makes! Today, the arts have a major economic and social impact on our communities and our quality of life, and Canadian artists and arts organizations are making a name for themselves both at home and internationally. Public funding – through such agencies as the Canada Council and its provincial, territorial, and municipal counterparts – has provided the impetus for this extraordinary growth and success. Over the past three years, for example, the Canada Council funded arts activities in some 825 communities across the country.

If the arts enrich your life, please let your elected officials know that public funding of the arts is a valuable and important investment in your community. Without it, organizations like Chor Leoni could not continue to flourish.
