Chor Leoni wins 2006 CBC/Radio-Canada National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs

Chor Leoni won first place in the Male Choir category of the 2006 CBC/Radio-Canada National Radio Competition for Amateur Choirs on May 2, 2006. Singing "live to air” from CBC Vancouver's Studio One, the choir performed "Iltapilviä" by Toivu Kuula, and an arrangement of "La Cucaracha" by Robert Sund.

Earlier in the day choir members had been forwarded the judge's comments from the semi-finalist round, which included such phrases as “Astounding singing from this choir - could have gladly listened to more” and “Impeccable technically.”

The last time the choir entered the CBC Competition was in 2002, where they swept the finals by placing first in two categories and winning a special prize for the Best Performance of a Canadian Work, Chant to Bring Back the Light, by R. Murray Schafer. They went on to represent Canada in the Let the Peoples Sing world championship. Here they competed against internationally renowned choirs representing twenty-one countries. Chor Leoni, the only male choir and the only North American choir in the entire competition, finished in the final four.
