Chor Leoni

Festival 500 AmbassadorsDear Members of Chor Leoni,

My sincere condolences to you all. I grieve for you and with you.
Diane was and continues to be a great inspiration to me both professionally and personally, and I am blessed indeed to have known her and shared many wonderful moments these past 20+ years. I had the privilege of working with her at ACCC of course but also had the privilege of conducting granddaughter Ella here in Montreal.

We also shared the honour of being named Festival 500 Ambassadors, Diane in 2011 and myself in 2007.
I share with you this photo taken at Festival 500 in 2011, which we called our Ambassador Photo. It has been up on my fridge
since then, and I love having it as a daily reminder of all the wonderful times shared with Diane (and Dick and Ella)
over the years.

Wishing you courage and peace,
Pat Abbott
former Executive Director of ACCC (1993-2009)

Vesnivka Choir and its musical director Halyna Kvitka Kondracki wish to express their sincerest condolences to the family of Diane Loomer, including her family of choristers. Ms. Kondracki and the members of Vesnivka had the pleasure of meeting Ms. Loomer in St. John’s, Newfoundland in 1997 where they also had the opportunity to sing with Chor Leoni at Festival 500 Sharing the Voices. The loss of Ms. Loomer, a vibrant and respected musician, is surely a tremendous loss to the entire choral community of Canada. May she be always remembered.

A tribute to Diane Loomer from The Vancouver Welsh Men’s Choir:

Our choir tonight joins thousands of other people in mourning the loss of Diane Loomer. With her gifts, talents and spirit she has influenced all of us, not only in the music community but in many other ways. Diane died just yesterday.

Diane has been recognized throughout Canada and indeed in the wider world of music as a visionary, an inspirer and a mentor to literally thousands of people who have had the privilege of knowing and learning from her. And we, members of the Vancouver Welshmen’s Choir, are among them.

She is the founder and until just this year Director of the now world - famous and award winning Vancouver Men’s Choir CHOR LEONI as well as the very popular and exciting Women’s Chorus ELEKTRA, and the outstanding Mixed Chorus of people who have known her over the years. That choir is called ENCHOR

It is difficult to speak of Diane Loomer except in Superlatives.

The City, the Province and the Country have all been led to honour her, bestowing the Order of Canada, Honorary Degrees and many other signs of recognition.

She will be sorely missed. But as in the life of all truly generous people Diane Loomer has left a legacy of compositions she made popular, musical arrangements she crafted or championed, Choirs she led and other leaders and performers she mentored.

They will ensure that her gifts continue to inspire and her music brings joy to thousand as long as we live.

As we share in the sadness felt by her Husband, Son, and the many others we are thankful for the gift of her influence and musical legacy and will cherish her friendship.

I wanted to pass on my condolences to all the members of Chor Leoni on the passing of Diane Loomer. Your choir, lead by Diane, sang at our wedding in 1999. What I always appreciated about Diane was her connection not only to music but to community in so many tangible ways. The presence of Chor Leoni, under Diane's leadership, made our wedding extraordinarily special and I will cherish those memories and be forever thankful for her presence in this world and in this community. Her spirit lives on in your voices and in your music and every nuance of Chor Leoni's sound that she so loved and nurtured. I will post the lyrics from one of the songs that Chor Leoni sang at our wedding - Diane and I disagreed about whether it was right for a wedding (she thinking not) but I thought the lyrics spoke to the various seasons of life through music, from the baby's lullaby, to the love song to the requiem. I think the lyrics are particularly appropriate t
o her passing - may we wrap her memory in song. With my heartfelt condolences.

In my heart's sequestered chambers lie truths stripped of poets' gloss
Words alone are vain and vacant, and my heart is mute
In response to aching silence, memory summons half-heard voices
And my soul finds primal eloquence, and wraps me in song

If you would comfort me, sing me a lullaby
If you would win my heart, sing me a love song
If you would mourn me and bring me to God,
sing me a requiem, sing me to Heaven

Touch in me all love and passion, pain and pleasure
Touch in me grief and comfort, love and passion, pain and pleasure
Sing me a lullaby, a love song, a requiem
Love me, comfort me, bring me to God

Sing me a love song, sing me to Heaven

The Association of Canadian Choral Communities (ACCC) is saddened to announce the recent death of Diane Loomer, C.M., on December 10 in Vancouver, British Columbia.

With the passing of Diane Loomer, we have lost one of Canada’s most successful and inspirational choral conductors. Diane has been a sensitive and generous mentor to so many young choral conductors and musicians. Her warmth and love was obvious to any of us who had the good fortune to work with her and it is one of the characteristics that made her such a successful conductor.

Always a strong and active supporter of ACCC, Diane has contributed significantly to the organization over the years. She served as co-ordinator of the National Youth Choir for several years, was NYC conductor (1994) and was a frequent clinician and master conductor at Podium conferences. Diane served as an ACCC board member for many years and was instrumental in establishing the ACCC Competition for Choral Writing. She has been a valued member of the National Competition for Canadian Amateur Choirs committee since 2010 and held the position as ACCC Vice President for Advocacy (2008 - 2012). The recipient of many awards throughout her career, Diane and her husband, Dick, were presented with the ACCC Distinguished Service Award in 2010.

Diane has been an inspiration to us all, not only as a superb choral musician but also as a wonderful, warm and caring person. It has been a joy and privilege to know her as a friend. We mourn our loss and celebrate the life of a truly special individual.

Jeff Joudrey, President ACCC

Dear Lions,

I am still shocked by the sad news that came my way today. As I write this message, I am still in disbelief...
It was a huge honor and privilege for me to have met and spent the two unforgettable weeks with Diane and all of you. I have learned so much from watching her rehearsing and performing with you. Not only music wise, but human and friend wise.
She was an inspiration for me, and will forever live in my heart.
It is now your duty to keep on working and singing as she taught you to.
I send you most sincere and deepest condolences from me and my choir members.
The most shining star among us has gone to the skies, to watch over us...

"As sure as the sunrise, as sure as the sea…
We rise again in the voices of our song."

Wisdom from Diane Loomer: "The Arts have the power to challenge our thoughts and assumptions, to inspire, to connect us to each other ... the arts have the power to make us better people … Remain open to change … Trust your instincts … Be kind … Give praise generously … Make a difference with your life. Don’t settle for ‘good enough’. Find and stick to your own standard of excellence. Make yourself and the world better through your work. Take care of each other. Sing. Sing… sing!"

You embodied this for us in the 'voice of your song,' Diane. Thank you! (md)

Thank you so much for that glorious concert in memory of Diane last night. Never have I felt such a personal sense of loss on the passing of a public figure.

Know what I loved best about Diane? Watching 50 men do exactly as one woman told them, exactly when she told them to do it!

The gift of music is the gift of food for the soul. Diane gave this in huge measure with joy, warmth, enthusiasm, skill and discipline to inspire not only her choirs but her city, her country, and the world. Her legacy of high standards and what can be achieved by fulfilling one's vision will continue to be an inspiration to many who had the blessing to know her and walk with her. To the family of Diane Loomer and the members of Chor Leoni, it is with great sadness that we heard about Diane's recent passing and we share your loss. The music world will certainly be the poorer without her. Many of her choir's arrangements have found their way into the repertoires of many other choirs and the richness of sound and the passion for singing that she extracted from Chor Leoni is rightfully famous and an inspiration to all of us. On behalf of our choir please accept our sincere condolences and we wish you well at this difficult time.

Diane was a warm and inspiring colleague. In 1988 we took the Elmer Iseler conducting workshop at Kathaumixw and she remained a good friend. Always humble and generous, she would share with me the joys of being female conductors of all male choirs. Her performances were always heartfelt and moving. Her wonderful husband impressed me that year as he was toting a canoe all around British Columbia. I will miss her smile and her music.

I was very sorry to read of the loss of Diane. I worked with her once only some years ago in Quebec, and was completely knocked out with the standards she achieved in an incredibly short time in her atelier. She was charming, fun and brilliant, and I send my condolences to all her family, and to the Chor Leoni.

I offer my deepest condolences to Diane Loomer's family, friends, and choir members. I had the priviledge of meeting her through a friend of mine who was a member of one of her choirs. From my first impression of her, she was a warm and inviting person. I was a student learning about sound engineering and she gave me the opportunity to job shadow the engineer during one of the live recordings done at Ryerson Church. I will never forget her for that. To see her conducting Chor Leoni and Elektra, and the music and sounds that came out of the singers...awe inspiring, fun, and ethereal are the first three words that come to mind. I'm grateful to have met her and attended her Chor Leoni and Elektra concerts.

Wherever in the world Diane Loomers choirs are heard, her amazing ability to make truly inspired music will live on. It is hard to believe that she is no longer with us and my heart weeps for her family and all of you who were privileged to work under her direction. I'd like you to know that when I first heard the Chor Leoni, I went online and was able to call her...we had a wonderful conversation and I will never forget her warmth and her humility. I mourn with all of you...

Over the years, I met up with Diane in various choral conducting settings and I can whole-heartedly say that she impacted my musical life in the most positive and inspiring ways. I so enjoyed hearing the Remembrance Day concert this year, as in past years, and am thankful for Diane leaving such a rich legacy through many Electra and Chor Leoni recordings. Very shortly after Chor Leoni was formed I went to one of their Remembrance concerts. I was so moved by the music and the wonderful soul stirring sound of a male choir. I decided then and there that I wanted to be in such a choir. Shortly after I auditioned with Diane and joined the Amabilis Singers. I am now a proud member of the Vancouver Orpheus Male Choir (for 16 years) and have achieved my wish. Thank you Diane for your passion and drive to bring choral music to so many. I actually graduated from music prior to Diane (1979) just after high school but was always inspired by her independent nature. If there wasn't an opportunity available to her, she went out and formed it...for example, Electra & Chor Leoni.

A great loss for the choral community, not only locally but - as the comments here show - across the world. Over the years I had the pleasure of singing with Chor Leoni on occasion as well as recording some of their CDs and many concerts.

Surely the last two lines of Laurence Binyon's well-known poem, "For the Fallen", so movingly sung at Chor Leoni's Remembrance Day concerts, applies here, too:

"...At the going down of the sun and in the morning | We will remember them."

Your legacy will live on, Diane, in the hearts and voices of all who knew you.

Trying to whittle down all of the wonderful memories of Diane is difficult. I chose to focus on her total involvement in the performances at the Bard. She would throw herself into the skits dressed in character, once in yellow pigtails and big freckles painted on her face, and a gingham pinafore with knee socks. She was adorable! And adored.

I met Diane first in 1965 in Philadelphia. Her life was not only music. She was a wonderful companion may it be eating Bratwurst in German guesthauses or "mountain food" in cottages in the Alps or watching football games of Dick's Air Force team in Frankfurt. She was almost as good a skier as a musician. She was a wonderful mother and together with Dick a lifelong reliable friend. We had the fascinating pleasure to see and enjoy her and the magnificient Chor Leoni for the last time at the festival in Gorizia/Italy last July. We are glad to have had such a farewell from her. Diane was authentic, genuine in everything, nothing artificial. Theologists say that these are the qualities of a Saint.

It has been 50 years since Diane was a student at Gustavus Adolphus College and we shared a friendship, both as singers in concert choir and sorority. Diane was such a genuine and talented person. Many times were spent with Diane at the piano playing while we sang for the simple joy of it. She was a real gem. The Board and patrons of Musique Saint Bernard, on Baie Sainte-Marie in Nova Scotia were deeply grieved by the loss of such an extraordinary artist. When Chor Leoni came to sing at St Bernard it was as if the heavens opened and broughta gift which we cherished for many years. Diane Loomer walked into that church, looked around, and immediately knew precisely how to use the acoustic of a large stone church to work brilliantly. It was a spectacular concert. This is a loss for all of us. It was a great honour to be in her presence and hear her choirs. Our condolences to her large family.

To all the members of Chor Leoni, and especially to Dick and the family, I can only begin to guess your loss and send you this poem by John O'Donohue

On The Death Of The Beloved

Though we need to weep your loss, You dwell in that safe place in our hearts, Where no storm or night or pain can reach you.

Your love was like the dawn Brightening over our lives Awakening beneath the dark A further adventure of colour.

The sound of your voice Found for us A new music That brightened everything.

Whatever you enfolded in your gaze Quickened in the joy of its being; You placed smiles like flowers On the altar of the heart. Your mind always sparkled With wonder at things.

Though your days here were brief, Your spirit was live, awake, complete.

We look towards each other no longer From the old distance of our names; Now you dwell inside the rhythm of breath, As close to us as we are to ourselves.

Though we cannot see you with outward eyes, We know our soul’s gaze is upon your face, Smiling back at us from within everything To which we bring our best refinement.

Let us not look for you only in memory, Where we would grow lonely without you. You would want us to find you in presence, Beside us when beauty brightens, When kindness glows And music echoes eternal tones.

When orchids brighten the earth, Darkest winter has turned to spring; May this dark grief flower with hope In every heart that loves you.

May you continue to inspire us: To enter each day with a generous heart. To serve the call of courage and love Until we see your beautiful face again In that land where there is no more separation, Where all tears will be wiped from our mind, And where we will never lose you again.
