When Chor Leoni took the stage at the 6th World Symposium for Choral Music in Minneapolis, thousands of conductors, singers and music educators from 60 countries caught a glimpse of Canada's distinguished choral tradition with a performance of Vancouver's Chor Leoni and their impressive conductor, Diane Loomer. Jonathan Quick's enchanting arrangement of the traditional Scottish ballad "Loch Lomond" not only revealed a breathtaking depth of tone and sensitivity to phrasing and ensemble, but also the perfect tenor lyricism displayed by the highly skilled soloist [Ray Horst – ed.]. And Quick's imaginative arrangement earned a huge applause for the craftsmanship and sweetness of his counterpoint. Canadian composer R. Murray Schafer was also on hand to take his bow following the choir's electrifying performance of two Magic Songs ("Chant to Bring Back the Wolves" and "Chant to Make the Stones Sing").
Here was great Canadian music with one of Canada's top choirs in a perfect blend of discipline and virtuosity revealing the rich tradition of choral art indigenous to the Canadian landscape. Bravo to Diane Loomer and her Vancouver Lions who earned the standing ovation awarded them from the sold out audience of world-wide connoisseurs.
