CD Review: Yuletide Fires (Toronto Star, November 2003)

Diane Loomer can hardly be accused of sexism. Having co-founded Vancouver's Elektra Women's Choir, she proceeded to found the Pacific Coast City's prize-winning men’s choir, Chor Leoni, as well, directing both a cappella ensembles in a highly praised series of concerts and recordings over the past decade and longer. In this latest album by her male singers, she directs their attention to an international Christmas program full of off-beat music from Canada and abroad, involving the folk rock band Mad Pudding and a number of additional solo and instrumental collaborators as well. In 2002 Chor Leoni became a triple winner in the biennial CBC National Competition for Amateur Choirs, winning first place for men's choir, contemporary performance and performance of a Canadian work. This album demonstrates why.
