This is an undeservedly overlooked album by a fine Vancouver-based men's choir. It features Conrad Susa's Carol and Lullabies: Christmas in the Southwest, based on traditional Spanish carols; and Magnificat, by Rupert Lang, music director at Vancouver's Christ Church Cathedral. The highlight is Ottorino Respighi's Lauda per la Natività del Signore, a setting of a Nativity narrative likely written by a 13th century monk. While Respighi is best known for orchestral works such as The Pines of Rome, he proves himself a master of vocal work. It's a gem of a composition, featuring complex choral harmonies and excellent arrangements. A skilled presentation of varied and challenging material.
